Moon sign: what it is and how to find it
Three different things get called the moon in a horoscope, and only one of them is a moon sign. The star sign belongs to the sun. The phase — waxing, full, waning — is a relationship between the moon and the sun, and belongs to a day rather than to a person. A moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the moon itself stood in at the hour of a birth; and because the moon crosses a whole sign in about 2 days 6 hours, the date alone is often not enough to say which one.
The sign, the phase and the star sign
The phase measures how far the moon has drawn away from the sun. The sign is an absolute position: where the moon falls against the zodiac. The cycles differ as well — the phases repeat every twenty-nine and a half days, while the moon returns to a given sign every twenty-seven and a third. Two people born at full moon in different months have different moon signs.
What the two share is a geometry. At a new moon the moon stands in the same sign as the sun, and at a full moon in the opposite one, so a full-moon birth with the sun in Taurus has the moon somewhere in Scorpio. This site uses both, in different places: the daily readings are written against the current phase, because a phase belongs to the day and to everyone standing in it, while a moon sign belongs to one instant and one person.
Two births on one date
The sun sign is generous. The sun sits in one sign for about a month, so unless a birth falls within a day of a boundary the date is sufficient and nothing further has to be asked. That is why sun-sign astrology travels so easily: it asks for so little.
The moon is not generous in that way. Two people born in the same city on the same date, one before lunch and one after dinner, can have different moon signs, and the two signs may share nothing in temperament. It is the commonest reason a moon sign comes out looking wrong: it was read off the date, and the date was ambiguous.
A time to the nearest hour almost always settles the question, and even a vague one helps, since most days contain no crossing at all. No birthplace is required — unlike the ascendant, a moon sign follows from a date and a time alone. The time does have to resolve to a real instant, which means the offset in force where the birth happened, not the one in force there now.
The fastest thing in the sky
The moon covers about 13° of the ecliptic in a day, shifting by roughly its own apparent width every hour. A sign is 30° wide, so a crossing comes round about every 2 days 6 hours; the sun takes a month to do the same. The pace is not steady either, since the orbit is an ellipse — over 15° a day when the moon is near, under 12° when it is far.
What follows from that is arithmetic rather than mystery. A sign every 2 days 6 hours means that on roughly two days out of five the moon changes sign at some point during the day. Any given birthday stands a fair chance of being one of them.
What the tradition reads in the moon
In the older texts the sun is the visible life and the moon is the one underneath it: temperament rather than manner, the register that does not report for work. If the sun is read as what a person is becoming, the moon is usually read as what they return to once the day is over.
The working vocabulary of the moon is soothing and agitation — what restores a person, whether company or quiet, routine or novelty, food, water, weather, a particular kind of room, and what unsettles them before it has been consciously registered. This is a tradition of description rather than a mechanism, and the site does not pretend otherwise. A moon sign is best held like a mirror at an angle: useful if what it shows is recognisable, and no worse than useless if it is not.
How exact the figure is
The moon’s ecliptic longitude here comes from a truncated ELP2000 series and carries about ±0.2°. At the moon’s usual pace that is around twenty minutes of travel, which places a sign confidently everywhere except within roughly half an hour of a crossing — and when a birth falls inside that window the page says so rather than guessing. It is the only honest use of a figure that wide.
