Unknown birth time: what a chart can still say
Not knowing the hour of a birth does not cost the whole chart. The sun is almost always safe, and the moon usually is. The ascendant is neither, and cannot be salvaged: it moves one degree every four minutes, and without a time there is nothing to compute it from. The better question is not how to work around the missing hour, but where that hour might still be written down.
The ascendant is the one that does not survive
The ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and the place of a birth. It is computed from the turning of the earth and the coordinates of that place, a derivation set out in full at /rising-sign. Every input but one is a matter of public record. The one that is not is the time.
It moves about one degree every four minutes, which is the entire zodiac in a day. Ten minutes of doubt costs two or three degrees and rarely matters. An hour costs something close to half a sign. A vague memory of morning costs three signs.
There is no averaging a way out of this. An ascendant is a single degree of a single sign, and a chart drawn on a guessed hour does not give an approximate ascendant. It gives a different one.
Where the hour is actually written down
Begin with the civil record, and ask for the complete version of it. In many countries the full or long-form certificate carries the time of birth while the abbreviated copy omits it. In France the copie intégrale of the acte de naissance gives the hour and the minute; in Japan the 出生届 filed with the municipality records the time, although the 戸籍 itself does not; in Taiwan the hospital’s birth certificate, filed at the household registration office, states it to the minute.
Then the domestic archive: a baby book, a child health booklet such as the Japanese 母子健康手帳, a card kept in a wallet, a newspaper announcement, a slip of paper written out for a naming. Hospitals are the least reliable route, since clinical records are usually destroyed once a retention period measured in single-digit years has expired.
If only memory remains, a better question than the obvious one is worth asking. Not what time the birth was, but whether it was dark outside, which meal was interrupted, who had to be woken, what was on the radio. Anchored answers are far more accurate than remembered clock faces.
A recovered time is still a clock reading
A time found on a document is a reading taken from a local clock, and local clocks have histories. Before anything can be computed it has to become a universal instant, which means knowing the offset in force in that place on that date rather than the offset in force there now.
Britain’s wartime summers are the sharp example: from 1941 to 1945, and again in 1947, the clocks ran two hours ahead of Greenwich in high summer, so a birth recorded at two in the afternoon in July 1944 happened at noon UTC. Offsets here are read from the IANA time zone database and evaluated at the birth instant, so schemes kept for a few years and then abandoned come out right. An hour in the wrong direction is 15° of ascendant.
What “some time in the morning” spans
Turn the memory into a range and take the range seriously. Some time in the morning usually means six o’clock to noon: six hours, and therefore about 90° of ecliptic passing the horizon.
Signs do not rise at equal speed, which is why the count is not simply three. At 40° of latitude — New York, Madrid, Beijing — Aries takes a little over an hour to rise while Leo takes about two and a half. A six-hour window usually holds three ascendants and sometimes four.
The honest result is a shortlist rather than an answer. Knowing that an ascendant is one of Cancer, Leo or Virgo does rule out the other nine, which is worth something. It is not the same as knowing.
What survives in the meantime
The sun moves a little under one degree a day, so it takes about a month to cross a sign and a full day to cross a boundary. On most birthdays it sits well inside its sign and the hour changes nothing. The exception is a changeover date, where the sun may have entered the next sign in the afternoon, so that a morning birth and an evening birth belong to different signs — and those instants shift from year to year. /zodiac-dates lists the seventeen dates that change sign between 1930 and 2030, with the number of years falling to each; a birthday two or more days clear of all of them is settled whatever the hour.
The moon spends about 2 days 6 hours in each sign and covers roughly 13° a day, so across an entirely unknown day it travels less than half a sign. On most days it begins and ends in the same sign; on something like two days in five it crosses a boundary, and then the hour decides everything. A chart built on a guessed time is a chart about a guess
Nothing prevents entering noon, and many people do. It is a convention rather than a compromise: everything that depends on the hour then describes a hypothetical person born at midday, and that person is someone else.
Astrologers have long practised rectification, working backwards from dated events to propose a birth time. Whatever it is worth as a craft, it is interpretation rather than astronomy, and it is not something this site does — nor does it compute houses, aspects or the other planets, as /method states plainly.
The most useful thing to do with an uncertain hour is to measure the uncertainty. Run the date on /rising-sign at six, at nine and at noon, and watch how far the ascendant travels. That distance is exactly what the missing time is worth.
